I have this set of 35 OLD leather encyclopedias from 1888 that I bought at a Dr.'s estate sale years ago. Have never even looked at them till recently. I bought them for space fillers on shelves...had no idea they were so old and FULL of old "centerfolds" of maps, anatomy, chemistry, agriculture...you name it. I'm finding a treasure trove here...and the patina on these is unbelievable! GORGEOUS!!! And all of these pics are just in one book...I have yet to look through the other 34. Maybe I'll find some money or a share of microsoft tucked into one of them.
I'm seriously considering framing some of these so they can be enjoyed! What do you think? I can only lay so many books around open as display, should I tear out and frame some of the best pics? circa 1888!!!

*I'm not understanding why sometimes I can get linky bottons to work down here, and other times I can't! What am I doing wrong?

Oh wow! Very cool!! I think I would. I don't think tearing them out VERY CAREFULLY and framing it would be terrible. Then you could do a grouping on the wall of your faves. I love those books!!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! I think a grouping of farm animals would fit your farmhouse style.
ReplyDeleteLucky you! I love them!
ReplyDeleteHow fun is that! Love the old images! Good thinking.
ReplyDeleteGreat subjects that would look great on a wall. I would probably tear them out, or you could copy them and then frame some.
ReplyDeleteI think you should frame away! Great find they would look wonderful framed. Laura Cottage and Broome Will be your newest follower
ReplyDeletedon't you love finding things you already have !
ReplyDeleteI would scan them ... be a shame to tear up the books...
1888. Wow these are very precious antique books. Don't tear anything out. I agree with the Scented Cottage scan or copy and use as you wish for lots of uses. Decoupage, framing, blowing up larger for scary poster. Just keep those precious books intact.
ReplyDeleteWhat a Treasure ~ I bet you'll spend some time now looking thru them all....
ReplyDeleteI think a copy or scan would be a good thing here. They are WONDERFUL graphics!
ReplyDeleteScanning would allow you to play with them a bit, too...might be interesting to see what you came up with!
Oh what a find! I would scan them in so the books could stay intact.

Oh my gosh -- I LOVE your encyclopedia images. For sure frame some of those.

Wow, what a find! I'd definitely frame some of these images. You can use the books for fillers and still enjoy the images as you wish for framing or other projects. ~ Sarah
ReplyDeleteFabulous old books...what a treasure. You can politely slice out a few pages to frame, I am sure nobody will miss them if you hadn't for so many years (smile). You won't forget them when they are displayed on the wall. Have fun...I have joined your followers list and invite you to join my followers list; as well,I hope you will grab a blog button. Yes, yes and YES!!! You could still keep the books out for display and nobody would ever guess there were pages missing. Here's another idea: frame them and sell them on Etsy!

sounds like it's time to talk to an expert. There must be people who can tell you if these are especially rare or valuable and, if they are, what the best way of creating prints or copies for framing would be.
ReplyDeleteYou can keep the books intact by just making copies at Kinko's and framing the copies. Seems a shame to tear out anything, already such a neat find, imagine in another hundred years how cool it will be.
