Terrific find and some design questions

I decided to go toodling around this morning, just shopping at little junky places nearby. I happened to overhear a woman telling another woman about a cottage turned antique store down the street. Of course I took off for it straight away.

It was such a great find! It was one of those places where you find so many things to buy that you have to leave things behind. DECISIONS!

I got a bunch of old medicine bottles for $1 each. I found so many things I wanted. Corbels, a gorgeous old breadbox, a childs wicker rocker with the most beautiful tea stained rose fabric seat. I was going to get the rocker but as I was walking out I noticed this huge old screen. And it was only $30! A dealer unloading her car had just set it down by the entrance.

I have the perfect spot for it in my master bath. We have this huge ugly awkward window. I wanted something in it or over it, but I still wanted the light. And being that it's so close to the tub, where my girls splash around regularly, I didn't want a fabric window treatment. You can't tell from the photos but that screen is over 5 feet tall!

I'm thinking I will hang it and center it in the window. My question for you guys is wall color. This bathroom is full of chippy whites, like my storage shelf here The Farmhouse Porch: I got a new camera for Christmas! I can finally keep up with you guys. : D

I'd like to do something in here to make all the white pop. I was thinking a very pale aqua. But will that be too cold since there is no upholstry in there? I've even thought about possibly doing a really pale greyish blue in there and my bedroom. The cabinets are a very dark brown with dark granite countertops.

Here's what I'm liking for the wall color

Muted Colors and the Beauty of Common Items

I love shabby looking quilts...

that are almost tattered and thread bare, faded and super soft from being washed and loved...

Inky edged, tea stained books and papers. Mossy textures and wavy glass...

I love chippy whites with vintage patterns and imperfections. Layers of oldness. Things that tell a story and didn't come from China.

Maybe I feel closer to my ancestors by surrounding myself with these things. Maybe after staring at a TV, computer or smart phone all day, these things remind me that life was once harder and simpler at the same time.

That someone once tended a farmhouse garden with a beautiful blue watering can everyday, instead of shoving apples into plastic bags at Walmart...

or played a game with family on the Farmhouse Porch on a Sunday afternoon.

I'm so glad all of these beat up, worn out cast-offs have come to me. They will be loved and appreciated. I feel honored to own these lovely old items from the past, and be able to share them with you!

Inside Fredericksburgs' Lavender Cottage...

When life gets hectic I tend to go on mental "memory-cations" and think about my times away from the daily grind. One of my favorite places in the world is the little town of Fredericksburg,TX. It's a laid back German settlement that has turned into what I would call the B&B capital of Texas. The antiquing is a main draw too!

I've gone a few times  for weekend getaways. Once with the hubs, and once with my Mom. Both fun in their own special ways. Obviously the trip with mom included lots more antiquing and cute cottagy-ness. I thought you guys might enjoy seeing the old farmhouse style cottage where we stayed. It was called the Lavender Cottage. I can't find it anymore online. I'm hoping it is only changing hands or getting an update, and not closed completely.

Mom and I

"Rather Sweet" Bakery. A MUST.

More "Rather Sweet Bakery" footage. Yeah, we went more than once in the short weekend we were there. Best 3 pounds I ever gained...

My favorite pitstop in Fredericksburg? Without a doubt a place called Homestead & Friends.
Wish I had pics to show you. Wish I had pics for myself...the inspiration is amazing! There will be a next time.

Gotta run...
